Alternative Weddings & Wedding Shoes

Traditional wedding shoes are usually white, satin and medium or high heel. That’s the case because most wedding dresses are white, long and of a satin-like material. But what of those brides who want to do things differently?

Just because the majority go with the white dress and white shoes does not mean you have to. Themed weddings are common these days and those themes can vary wildly – you only have to look at shows on TV like Four Weddings and Don’t Tell The Bride to know that!

You might, for example, want a very traditional but very VINTAGE wedding. A long, off-white gown with an even longer train, very old wedding car or even a horse and carriage. What shoes would you choose then?

Fortunately, there is a wide range of vintage wedding shoes available on the market, all created by big name designers like Rachel Simpson and Filippa Scott.

They are very much like the usual wedding shoes but feature beautiful, vintage embellishments that make them really stand out.

These vintage bridal shoes are not typically white, they tend to be ivory, teal, silver or mink though, of course, if white is what you want, white you can get.

They vary in design depending on the era too, with styles from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, Victorian, Edwardian and even Old Hollywood. These are all available in high and medium heel and flat shoes, depending on the designer and era.

For that extra special touch, you can attach shoe clips that look like they are made from pearls and diamonds. They will add a sparkle and catch the eye.

Less traditional brides will not want a heeled, white or ivory coloured, material shoe however. Some brides go for red shoes, black shoes or pink shoes.

Non-traditional wedding shoes have included trainers or sneakers, boots (like Doc Martens) and even, in very rare cases, slippers!

Location also plays a big part in the choice of wedding shoes – a church wedding demands a heeled shoe and a pair of vintage bridal shoes would be even more perfect. A wedding in a courthouse or registry office would be better served with a flatter, more comfortable bridal shoe however.

Getting married abroad in an exotic location? Chances are you’ll be walking across the beach at some point…so go for a flat sandal or flip flop! You do NOT want to be trying to cross the sand in a high heel do you!

At the end of the day, it comes down to the bride herself on the wedding theme she has, the style of dress she wears and the type of bridal shoes she sports. The very traditional will always go for the standard, the vintage shoe will always suit the glamorous or flashy and there will always be a market for sports shoes, boots and yes, even slippers as the wedding shoes.

One thing that is guaranteed is this – the groom has not and will never have a say in these little details that matter so much to the bride!

Outdoor Weddings

Outdoor weddings are the ones most people remember. Whether it's sitting on a beach, or taking in a backdrop of breathtaking mountains, we remember these moments. This is one reason outdoor weddings are so popular. There is a beauty about being outside. The biggest factor to ruin an outdoor wedding, however, is the weather.

Several years ago I was invited to a wedding in Sedona Arizona. It was in September and the guests were told to bring summer clothes as the weather was expected to be warm. My friend had planned on saying 'I do,' under blue skies and sunshine. Then they got the report that a storm was on its way.

They somehow secured a tent with only a day's notice. Not only did the storm roll in, but the temperatures dropped and it began to snow. Inside the tent, they had only managed to find two heat lamps. The guests were cold, and I spent most of the night, with the rest of the guests huddled under the heat lamp.

As a couple about to get married, the last thing you want to have to worry about is the weather. Therefore, an outdoor wedding ceremony with an indoor reception is the perfect way to go. If weather rolls in, the ceremony can be moved indoors without too much hassle. It doesn't matter whether you life in California or Arizona, bad weather can come out of nowhere.

When there is an indoor portion to the venue, you can rest easily the night before the wedding and not chew your nails to pieces wondering if it's going to rain, snow or sizzle. Hot weather can be just as hard for the bride and groom and guests as cooler weather. If you do have an outdoor ceremony during hot summer months, try to plan for some cold water to be served to guests as they wait.

Another problem with outdoor weddings is guests may leave early if the weather is too much for them. Heat is one factor that might encourage guests to leave early. The cold is another factor that can drive people away early. For everyone's comfort, have the option of moving indoors after the ceremony.

A couple of nice things about having an indoor portion to the wedding are the chairs tend to be more comfortable. The furniture is usually more lavish. Not to mention, you don't have to worry about the wind sweeping decorations off the table or blowing candles out. Things generally go more smoothly when receptions are had indoors.

Generally the furniture is more comfortable for indoor areas and decorations can be more elaborate. Candles will stay lit and table cards won't blow away. Having an indoor area allows for much more control as to the ease and smoothness of how the reception flows.

Leave connecting doors open if it's beautiful day, but let your guests be more comfortable without hair blowing in their faces, or bugs swarming the candles. Combining an indoor/outdoor wedding will make everyone happy.

Planning Weddings

Planning weddings well in advance will help to make any wedding trouble free. If you are planning a wedding you should keep in mind the following important aspects of any wedding:

1. Think about getting other people involved into the planning. If it's your own wedding, think of getting your family members and friends involved. If you are planning a wedding for someone else, still try to seek out some ideas from other people.

2. Choose a theme for the wedding, which should include the overall style and the small details to give uniqueness to this wedding.

3. Try the food that you are going to have at the wedding reception. The food might not be as good as it's advertised, so it's a good idea to try it in advance.

4. Try to come up with some special ideas to make this wedding stand out from the rest. For example, instead of regular favors you may have something special.

For instance, you can get blank CDs, burn a dozen songs that mean a lot to the bride and groom, put the names of the bride and the groom and the date on them, and place them on a table for the guests to get their copy.

5. When planning weddings, it's a good idea to have a simple backup plan for anything that might go wrong, including the transportation, the food, the location, and so on.

6. Carefully plan the budget of the wedding and stick to it. It's actually not that hard to plan the budget of a wedding if you use a percentage breakdown approach.

For example, the reception party is usually the most expensive part of any wedding, so you should allocate about 50% of the available finances for it. Next are photo/video and the bride's and groom's attire, with 10% of the total amount each.

Next are flowers and music, 8% each. Next are the stationary, rings and ceremony, which are 3% of the total available amount each. Additional small expenditures may be transportation and anything else that you might decide to have at the wedding.

7. No matter whose wedding is being planed; the bride and groom should not be overwhelmed with the planning. A wedding is a very important event, but it's just an overture to the main thing - a happily married life for the newlyweds.

Planning weddings is a substantial responsibility, but a good step by step plan will help you make this event remarkable and memorable for everyone, including the bride and the groom, their family and friends, and the guests.
